Getting into a trance

by Laura De Giorgio on May 11, 2010

Charles writes, “I believe I have problems either being put in a trance or putting myself in a trance.  For some reason I just can’t do it.  I would like to change some habits so I don’t ever do them again and wonder where I should go from here.  Thanks! Charles.”

You are getting into a trance each time you use your imagination, each time you are directing your attention inwardly.  Sometimes it may happen quickly and briefly, e.g. when you are trying to remember something.  Other times you may allow yourself to drift inwardly for longer periods of time and even fall asleep – and that’s something that you do each day before you fall asleep.

Getting into a trance is simple.  One way of doing it is to focus on one point outside of your or in your imagination. It can be a spot on the wall somewhere about your eye level, or a candle flame, or even your hand, or any object outside of you.  Or it can be some idea in your mind – an image, a word, a sensation within you – it doesn’t matter what it is, but when you fix your attention on one thing, or you close your eyes, you’ll find yourself becoming immersed in whatever you contemplate with your mind and the more you allow yourself to experience the idea you are contemplating, the deeper will you drift into a trance.
